How To Grow An Authentic Audience

How to grow an Authentic Audience

Growing an authentic audience is a critical element of every successful business. Why? Because you want to increase your following of people who are interested in your product or service; who will recommend you and ultimately buy from you at some point in the future.

Big brands spend millions researching their client base to understand their daily habits and then they use that information to tailor their messaging to appeal to that audience. Think about Facebook and how it tracks your activity and tailors adverts to you.

How to grow an Authentic Audience

Firstly, you need to know who your audience is.  To get started, ask yourself these questions:

  1. Who is going to buy your product or service? (paint a picture of them in your mind)
  2. What do they like?
  3. Where do they go?
  4. Where do they live?
  5. Where do they shop?  How do they shop?
  6. Where do they work?
  7. What’s their lifestyle like?
  8. What problems do they have?
  9. What worries do they have?
  10. What might they be wishing for?

Be Real and Genuine to build an Authentic Audience

People can sense fakeness a mile off – it’s in our senses. If you want to build an authentic audience, be authentic and real yourself. It doesn’t mean that you have to share all your worries and problems with the world but finding a voice which is true and genuine means that you don’t have to pretend to be someone you aren’t (which quite frankly is pretty exhausting and not sustainable).

Sell the Problem

There’s a great quote that goes “sell the problem you solve, not the product”.

Why is this such a great quote? Simple because people buy things that solve a problem for them.

When you talk to your audience you need to talk about the things that are bothering them and are causing them an issue. This is because you will not only be tapping into a nerve point, you’ll also be telling them that you know and understand them (which helps to build the know, like, trust that we need). Then once you’ve told them that you know and understand their problem, you can explain how you’ll solve it for them … and finally tell them how great they’ll feel once the problem is solved.

Build your Network

Once you know who is likely to buy your product or service you need to get out there and find them. You could have THE best product in the world, the best logo, the most amazing website … but if no-one knows who you are then you aren’t going to sell anything much.

Think about who your authentic audience are and where they might hang out. Hang out in the same place. The online platforms, the groups, the clubs, the shops, the network meetings … all of those places. And talk to them. Get yourself onto the relevant social media platforms and post every day in an authentic way. Use video. Write blogs. Collaborate with other business owners and build yourself a real, authentic and supportive community.

You may not build a business overnight, but you will be building a business which has strong foundations, is genuine, really understands it’s customers and has authenticity at it’s core.
