What Making Tax Digital Means for Landlords

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment is changing how landlords report income to HMRC, and the rollout is already underway. From April 2026, it becomes mandatory for landlords with total income above £50,000. That threshold drops to £30,000 in April 2027 and £20,000 in April 2028.

Under the new rules, you will need HMRC-approved software to keep digital records, submit quarterly updates to HMRC, file an annual End of Period Statement and complete a Final Declaration at year end.
